Why Real Estate?
“There is no ceiling… and no floor” – Ryan Serhant on a motivational speaking event on YouTube

Update: 03-10-21

Working on my own business as a realtor for already 2 years. The first year has been difficult, as also hit COVID-19, plus the fact I had to learn a lot. Everyone may know, that my first sale was just in September 2020 which is just 1 year ago. But, when the ball starts rolling, it rolls.

Made on average 1 sale a month, 1 a month! Holy cow that’s amazing! Sold in total now 13 and 1 is reserved to go to the notary in October. I’m feeling amazing and I notice every day that this career fits me very well.

At the moment I’m reading and listening to a lot of books as “Think and Grow Rich”, “Sell or be Sold”, “The Closings Survival Guide”. They all are available on YouTube to listen to. Really can recommend these when in sales. Well, even without being in sales, you can use these books also in your daily life.

What Is So Great About Being a Real Estate Agent?

Just like every other entrepreneur, we need to make our own money. There are real estate agencies who will pay you a monthly salary but I just think that’s boring.

I need challenges, I need ups and downs, I need the competition of the other agencies. And especially I need my lovely clients. It fills up my heart to be able to help them with buying or selling. It’s not something you do daily, and it’s not easy. Been there, done that.

It’s just super exciting, starting as a broker. You are building your own business, your own brand. You’ll wake up and face the day to go after YOUR OWN DREAM!

Do you know what’s very motivating? Edit a photo of your face, and make yourself old with wrinkles and all. Every day when you see that picture, you will get reminded of who you’re doing all this for.

As Ryan Serhant said, – The most successful broker in the whole world, “In real estate, there is no ceiling, (and no floor – LOL)”… You can make as much money as you want.

Why Real Estate

Everyone Can Do It?

Anyone can LEARN it, depends on where you’re based, in America for example, you need to get a real estate license, and then after, you’re having a lóóóóót of competition. “Data from HomeLight shows there are over 2 million active real estate agents in the U.S.

In Holland, you need to go to a real estate school (for 3 years) or do a big course (which costs min. €1300). I don’t know about the competition in Holland because I haven’t been a broker in Holland (yet).

How I got into Real Estate

Here in Spain, Málaga, I came in touch with the real estate world because of an American friend of mine. He already works in the company for about 2 years, the famous Keller Williams which is called now ZOME. He had asked me before if I didn’t want to sell houses, and I said, “What, me?! Nooo, I can’t sell houses”
When he asked me again, because he really saw things in me that I didn’t see, I said: “Ok, I’ll give it a try, but I need some guidance, because I don’t know sh*t about it, I’ve never been to school for this”. He said “Sure, you’ll have me and a business coach”

So let’s start!

First Few Weeks at The Office

I went every single day to the office, to go to the theaters, to practice phone calls, to learn how to present myself, and to learn the service presentation. At home I still was watching videos on Youtube, making phone calls with my friend to give me tips, etc.
At the beginning of September, I started calling. I was so nervous! I just never liked calling people, never! (Actually, in the past I’d rather avoid calling, even I was scared to make an appointment for the hairdresser)

From my very first call, I got my very first appointment to meet the owners and the house. In the end, I almost got my first listing with them, but they sold their house on their own. I didn’t give up, I kept saying to myself:

“You can’t build new muscles if you don’t train!”

So I was calling and calling, and in the 2nd week of being “active”, we had a challenge at work. Per person, we needed to call 100 leads in that week! 20 phone calls a day. Wow, that was hard, especially because I didn’t have a motor yet and I was running from A to B to C through the whole of Málaga. Sometimes I walked for about 3 hours a day!

But, I got my first listing that week. I was so happy. Didn’t know that that house was wááy out of price, but at least I could work on something. Directly planned an Open House, which in Spain is still a weird thing. (They don’t understand or are not used to these things)
I made food, – a lot. And there came 3 clients. Well, for Spain not too bad. But I thought, could be worse as well. I was starting to feel like a real estate agent, and I slowly fell in love with this idea of becoming the BEST of the company.

You need to be strong and DON’T give up!

We work with commissions. If I don’t sell, I will not get paid. It’s hard, but it is what it is. For me, this way of working motivated me even more to do the best I can. It’s investing a lot of time for experiences, and experiences weigh way more than the money. Because with experience you can make money. And that’s why there is no ceiling with this work in the sales.

If you are an expert, you can earn big money. It’s not the money that motivates me the most, I’m in love with the work, and I want to feel free being my own boss, I want to save money for my family. My goal is that nobody in my family needs to complain about money, so we have the time to spend together because time GOEST FAST.

What is life when you can’t enjoy the things you love to do?!

Search your big “Why”, your big why will be your engine to get you through the days when you’re having a bad day or you’re wanting to give up. If your why is big enough, you will NEVER quit!

Read here my blog post about “Why is it SO important to have a why?”

Goal setting

Having goals is a must when you want to achieve something. But, be careful with setting goals because your goal can feel too far away and you’re more likely to give up. Also thanks to my American friend, he borrowed a book about The ONE Thing. This book is the number #1 business/mindset book of all time made by Gary Keller (Keller Williams)

This book is explained how to set goals and how to split them up into smaller goals. You will go from your SOMEDAY goal to your 5 YEAR goal, to your 1 YEAR goals, to your MONTHLY goal, to your WEEKLY goal, to your DAILY goal to what you can do right NOW to get to your someday goal.

My Goals

So I’ll show you my goals regarding my career. You can also have goals for health, family, spirituality, etc.

  • My someday goal is to have a big Real Estate Team like Ryan Serhant (I love you man). This is my biggest motivation at this moment.
Because a big team means success and money, so I could travel the world whenever I want, where ever I want and be with my loved ones.
  • My 5-year goal is that I’ve expanded from being a freelancer to a small team with around 3 or 4 people.
  • My 1-year goal is selling up to 8 houses here in Spain. We all have to start somewhere. I will gain as much experience as possible.
  • My monthly goal is at least try to sell 1 listing before the end of the year.
  • Weekly goal to achieve my monthly goal is, work productively and get on the phone for Lead Generation (Number #1 most productive thing in the Real Estate)
  • Daily goal today is to relax because you can’t work if you’re burned out of all the work.
  • So what I’m doing now… is hanging around the house a bit, working on my website and later going for a walk in beautiful Málaga.

Do you have goals that you want to achieve? Or have you ever thought of becoming a real estate broker? You really should give it a try. I honestly can say that I love every bit of it!
